Field names tell tales (Flurnamen erzählen): On field names in the viticultural regions of Wachau, Kremstal and Kaptal, their origin and their meaning
Wachau Cultural Landscape

Project aim

To publish top research outputs on the “names of viticultural fields in Wachau, Krems and Kamptal” and to secure the resulting knowledge for future generations.

Project description

The Krems-based historian Dr Elisabeth Arnberger-Kugler describes in her 300-page long work how the field names of individual vineyards in Wachau, Kremstal and Kaptal came about, how they were passed down, how they have developed over centuries (often in a very bizarre manner) and what they mean. The names of viticultural fields provide information about the location and type of land, the quality of the soil and the yield to be expected, the type and use of ownership, animals and plants, regional particularities and much more. The book is therefore a key to achieving a better understanding of the particularities of individual vineyards and retains this information for future generations.

What people think

What is interesting about this project is, among other things, that the informal knowledge based on experience, passed on for generations and then recreated in the traditional names of vineyards is written down and retained and that it can now be published as a book and made accessible to everyone.”

“A good idea to make the results from vineyard name research into something fruitful for marketing the region. With the knowledge gained through this project, it has become possible to tell the lengthy history of this cultural landscape. Not only is this interesting for customers, it also improves sales revenue. Perhaps even the locals will learn something new about their own past.”
