World cultural heritage – Children’s guide
The City of Graz – Historic centre and Schloss Eggenberg

Project aim

Children should be presented with easily accessible information about the UNESCO World Heritage of Graz and World Heritage as a concept should be explained to them, drawing attention to the need to preserve world heritage. This should motivate future generations to set up funds and strategies for preserving World Heritage.

Project description

With the help of the ISG and ARCHelmoma, the UNESCO World Heritage office in Graz developed the first World Heritage guide for children, aimed especially at 8-10-year-olds. TURMI is a fun and exciting, but also educational, journey of discovery through the world heritage of Graz. Designed in a handy pocket-book format, the children’s guide teaches primary school-aged girls and boys more about World Heritage in an understandable and child-friendly way, awakening their curiosity to find out more. On hand-drawn plans of the city, TURMI leads kids through individual districts, points out special features and invites them to discover more through interactive content. This way, each child can form their own personal idea of World Heritage and transfer it to the booklet.

What people think

“It’s like a little Mr Men book on World Heritage. TURMI leads the way through Graz with his Styrian hat and takes a kid’s perspective – pointing out interesting features and asking questions – just as children would.”

“You can never start encouraging an awareness of the value of cultural heritage too early. The children’s guide is a modern way of teaching ‘local history’. If you give children a certain pride in their town, they will grow up to feel responsible for it later on.”
