LEADER project “Inwertsetzung Welterbe” [Valorising World Heritage]
Fertö – Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape

Project aim

Promoting awareness and sensitising the population to the World Heritage site and ensuring its upkeep by consulting closely with key actors, presenting regional particularities relating directly to the World Heritige site and strengthening connections with schools and other educational institutions via projects on World Heritage.

Project description

The status “World Heritage site” benefits from a degree of international awareness and represents a means of promotion, particularly in the field of tourism. This opportunity and potential will be highlighted and used more strongly. Sensitising the population to the cultural and natural phenomena of the Neusiedler See region is a core aspect of maintaining the UNESCO World Heritage site Fertö-Neusiedler See. Actors with a direct influence on the natural, cultural and architectural landscape of the region will be sensitised through targeted information and workshops relating to the particular challenges of structural, managerial and cultural development, as well as future conduct regarding the World Heritage site. Furthermore, various components will contribute to embedding the aims of the World Heritage site in the minds of local/regional decision makers, the population and guests for the long term.

What people think

“The strengthened connection with and sensitisation of school pupils is a significant measure to sustainably and actively involve the public in the World Heritage site and cultural landscape of Fertö-Neusiedler See.”

“How much do you know about the cultural history of the place in which you live?” Often not enough. The cultural and natural particularities of the Neudiedler See region will be taught primarily to actors in the UNESCO World Heritage site Fertö-Neusiedler See with an influence on the construction culture, sustainable management and cultural development of the region. Rather than bans and regulations, training and sensitisation will trigger a snowball effect, which should lead to a paradigm change in dealing with this valuable resource – a World Heritage site.”
