Cadastre of Salzburg’s old town façades
Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg

Project aim

Maintaining historical stucco and colours on town house façades and highlighting their historic and stylistics character as well as creating a planning basis for architects and builders and an academic basis for expert commissions (expert commission for maintaining the old town in Salzburg, Federal Monuments Authority for Salzburg), art historians and historic preservation.

Project description

The burghers’ house façades are a key characteristic of Salzburg’s old town. Discoveries and findings from mapping the façades form an important foundation for preserving historical stucco and colours. In the future, the colours, materials and textures of the historical stucco can be taken into consideration when restoring façades. The few surviving façades from the 18th century in Salzburg old town should be preserved in their original form. Studies into styles of old town façades throughout the history of art also allow us to describe artistic impressions of the façades from the Middle Ages.

Strategy:

  • Documenting the stylistic diversity of burghers’ house façades
  • Analysing and documenting the upper hues, materials and textures of the façades and/or the composition of layers of existing patterns of colour and from historical construction periods with plans, photos and material analyses
  • Gathering different types of stucco and processing techniques
  • Statistically analysing the findings

What people think

“Systematically recording what already exists is the foundation for taking care of our historic monuments responsibly and sustainably.”

“By compiling a cadastre, we can create a scientific foundation and a basis for planning that makes it easier to maintain the original stucco of façades in Salzburg old town in future. This provides lasting support for the work of architects, builders, art historians and those taking care of historical buildings.”
