The Zweidrittelgericht in Landeck
Knowledge concerning nature and the universe in Tyrol, inscribed 2017

The Zweidrittelgericht [two-thirds court] is a social practice for managing alpine pastures where young cattle and sheep are grazed that to this day functions according to time-honoured historical rules. Discussions and decisions regarding these alpine meadows’ use rely on centuries-old experiential knowledge that is orally transmitted. A special status is enjoyed by the Hutverlassung [an end-of-season meeting of all involved individuals] as well as the office of the Gewalthaber [the person in charge, lit. “possessor of power”], whereby group’s entire collected experiential knowledge is necessary for the process of managing the individual parcels of land.
