[Translate to EN:] KÜLTÜŘ GEMMA! FELLOWSHIP: Barriers to Mobility

From November 2021 to April 2022, Daria Tchapanova worked as a kültüř gemma! Fellow at the Austrian Commission for UNESCO and explored artistic mobility in a video project. In her visual research, she spoke with 12 artists and cultural workers about their experiences of cross-border movement and artistic freedom.

Artistic freedom is far-reaching and also concerns the mobility of artists and cultural workers. The reality shows that artists have difficulties freely practicing their work in Austria due to the crossing of political borders. Often they are exposed to precarious living situations. Daria Tchapanova's project explores the very difficulties that political borders - social as well as bureaucratic - entail through conversations with affected artists. The visual research followed a process-oriented approach. Now a research report provides insight into the conversations: quotes from the 12 people tell stories and show the real consequences of the existing mobility barriers.

The numerous hours of video recordings will also be used in a form of visualization, which artist Daria Tchapanova will develop in the coming months - after the Fellowship has ended. The video research was implemented with the financial support of the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Public Service and Sports.
