Workshop "African Diaspora in Dialog" in images

On 20 November 2023, the Austrian Commission for UNESCO organised the event "African Diaspora in Dialogue: Challenges and Opportunities in the Austrian Arts and Culture Sector", moderated by Vanessa Spanbauer and Klara Koštal.

Visas, residencies and access to the arts and culture sector - there are many hurdles for artists from the African continent before they can gain a foothold in Austria. Many of the individual and structural obstacles they face are rarely addressed in the industry and people are left to fend for themselves. At the invitation of the Austrian Commission for UNESCO, experts discussed the status quo and developed recommendations.

The event was part of an initiative by the Austrian Commission for UNESCO to focus on global asymmetries in the arts and culture sector and was organised as part of the work in the framework of the "UNESCO Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions" and the "UNESCO Global Priority Africa".

The results of the workshop, together with analyses from individual interviews and desk research, will be published online. This is expected to be published in January 2024.

With thanks for the financial support to the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport.
