Specialities of individual pharmacies
Traditional craftsmanship throughout Austria, inscribed 2010

Specialities of individual pharmacies have been part of local traditions for a long time and include knowledge on nature, cures and healing that had formerly been passed down orally, and have since been documented in recipe books. The making of these products requires certain special instruments, pharmaceutical resources and skills. Austrian pharmacists consider this transferred knowledge as part of their cultural heritage.

The production of these specialities of individual pharmacies requires not only medicinal resources, but also special equipment and the appropriate technical knowledge. The active pharmaceutical ingredients are available without prescription and adhere to quality standards prescribed by the pharmacopoeia (pharmaceutical handbook). Due to the fact that Austrian pharmacists provide the population with these self-made specialities of individual pharmacies, it is possible to retain a certain valuable medicinal stock. The products can only be handed over in the pharmacies, where they were partially or entirely produced.
