New Year's apology card practice in Hall in Tirol
Social practices in Tyrol, inscribed 2024
Dating back to the beginning of the 19th century, the New Year's apology card (NYAC), which is an artistically designed print, exempted people/institutions from the social obligation of extending New Year's wishes or paying New Year's visits. These cards are sold in aid of charitable causes. In the past, there were more than 50 different cards from towns/cities throughout Austria and the former territories of the Habsburg monarchy, but the NYAC from the region of Hall in Tirol is one of the only ones still produced today.
In keeping with the fundamental concept of the NYAC, the donors are named publicly. Since the very beginning, their donations have been advertised in the local press and on public notice boards; nowadays, donors are also named on the internet. When the NYAC was introduced, the main reason behind the donations was to free people from somewhat burdensome social obligations, whereas the focus has since shifted towards the cards' artistic appeal. Combining art and culture with charitable endeavours is now the key priority and this will ensure that the NYAC custom continues to spark the interest of future generations.
Due to the variety of artists, motifs, and techniques, collectors are introduced to a wide range of artwork. Hall in Tirol's NYAC strives to introduce local artists to the population, whether they originate from the region or have moved to the area from elsewhere. The motifs of the NYAC must also be clearly associated with the region of Hall in Tirol.
The support given to the projects leads to social, economic, and ecological sustainability. In the case of the NYAC from the region of Hall in Tirol, the donations from the proceeds are split: half of the money goes to local charitable organisations which help local people, while the other half is awarded to projects abroad, primarily those organisations carrying out school projects for children and young people in developing countries. The donation seal of approval is a prerequisite for all projects supported in Austria and abroad.
