Forging in Ybbsitz
Traditional craftsmanship in Lower Austria, inscribed 2010

Metal forging has a very long history in Ybbsitz (Lower Austria). Certain forging dynasties, known as the “black dukes” (Schwarze Grafen) due to their skills and their outstanding wealth, have 200 year-old family traditions. The blacksmith shop of the Welser family has been within the family for 15 generations, for example.

Families are also putting great value on the transfer of their forging know-how to younger generations in new and entertaining ways. For instance, a secondary school in Ybbsitz offers specific training which teaches the pupils the basic techniques of forging. Furthermore, local factories make sure that forging plays a major role in the teaching of metallurgy to apprentices.
