UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. It is one of 16 legally independent organisations within the scope of the United Nations, and it has its headquarters in Paris/France.
Austria joined UNESCO on 13 August 1948. The Austrian Commission for UNESCO was set up in 1949 as the national liaison office under Article VII.1 of UNESCO’s constitution.
The membership contribution to UNESCO, amounting to some US$ 1.1 million or € 1.2 million (2009), is paid by the budget department of the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
The Austrian Commission for UNESCO is funded by an annual contribution paid by the Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture, which covers expenditures for infrastructure, staff and educational activities.
